Walter M. Hoover (Duluth BC, Minnesota)
In 1922, one day after winning the Philadelphia Gold Challenge Cup
(the single sculls championship trophy) Walter Hoover embarked for
England to compete at the Henley Royal Regatta. He won two heats
advancing to defeat England's Jack Beresford in the final. Hoover
was the second American to win the race, and the first in 22 years.
After retiring as a competitive sculler in 1928, Hoover coached rowers
from the Detroit Boat Club. In 1956, he was the coach of the U.S.
Olympic rowing team's small boats. His five teams won two gold
medals (M2-, M2+), two silver medals (M2X, M4-) and one bronze
medal (M1X) at the Olympic regatta in Melbourne.
