	This GDR M4+ (Walter & Ulrich Diessner, Ruediger Kunze, Andreas Schulz, cox Wolfgang Gross) was world champion in 1974 and won the silver medal at the WRC at Nottingham 1975 and - with Joannes Thomas as cox - at the OG Montreal 1976. Later on the Diessner brothers won Olympic gold at the OG at Moscow 1980 in the M4+ event.

This crew dominated the M2+ event between 1981

and 1991 by winning the gold medal at two Olympic

Games and seven World Rowing Championships:

WRC Munich 1981, WRC Lucerne 1982, Olympic

Games Los Angeles 1984, WRC Hazewinkel 1985,

WRC Copenhagen 1987, Olympic Games Seoul 1988,

WRC Bled 1989, WRC Tasmania 1990 and WRC Vienna

1991. In the M2+ final of the Olympic Games Barcelona

1992 the Abbagnale brothers lost against the Searle

brothers of Great Britain in an epic battle and won the

silver medal.

Giuseppe Abbagnale was elected president of the Italian

Rowing Federation in 2012.
