Carter was a First Trinity BC (Cambridge) cox who at Henley Regatta 1861 steered all his four crews in the Grand Challenge Cup (M8+), Ladies' Challenge Plate (M8+), Stewards' Challenge Cup (M4+) and Visitors' Challenge Cup (M4+) to victory.
