CC CAN 1949 CRACKER JACK W.M. LOWNEY °Sport - yesterday and today° No. 22 Rowing and Sculling

The text on the back reads: Rowing was in great favour in England well over 100 years ago. The first collegiate regatta was held in 1829 when Oxford and Cambridge challenged each other to a race. Since then there have been 93 races of which Oxford won 43, Cambridge 49, with 1 tie. The Royal Canadian Henley Regatta is usually held in Ontario, attracting many American oarsmen, as well as others from all over the world. The world's title changed hands many times until the coming of Ted Phelps, one of England's greatest oarsmen, who beat all comers until finally defeated in 1933 by H.R. Pearce of Toronto. |
